Nokia unveils its third Near Field Communication (NFC) device called the Nokia 6216 classic. It is the company’s first SIM-based device which allows operators to deploy NFC services on to the SIM Card.

With the NFC service, users can easily share images, weblinks, contact data and audio files in addition to making secure payment and ticketing transactions with just a simple tap of the device. This phone comes with the capability of securely storing credit card information, user account and other important information on the SIM card.

Moreover, quick payments can be done by just waving the phone in front of a contactless terminal. To use this contactless ticketing and payment services, a compatible NFC SIM card and a service subscription is required as well as the installation of an appropriate secure application.

“The Nokia 6216 classic will be amongst the first commercial devices in the market complying with operator requirements using the SIM card in connection to secure transactions with Near Field Communications,” adds Jeremy Belostock, head of near field communications at Nokia. “With the Nokia 6216 classic in your pocket and the ticketing applications on the SIM you can replace the multitude of cards in your wallet. Having the applications on the SIM consumers can bring their secure applications to their next Nokia NFC enabled phone.”

Besides the NFC technology, the Nokia 6216 phone sports a 2 inch TFT display screen and a 2 megapixel camera with flash. It comes with a 22 MB of internal memory and supports expansion upto 8GB via a microSDHC card. It also supports 3G and Bluetooth connectivity and integrates a stereo FM radio and a music player.

The Nokia 6216 Classic phone is expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2009 and carries a price tag of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.
