New NFC capabilities now packed into Android 2.3.3

Gingerbread NFC Android 2.3 or Gingerbread, which launched several weeks ago undoubtedly includes new platform technologies and APIs to help developers build interesting apps. With the aim of increasing its efficacy, the Android Developers blog recently announced an update to Android 2.3 that lets developers work on its new NFC capabilities.

The relatively new NFC technology offers various capabilities including mobile ticketing in public transport, mobile payments, advertising, data exchange between devices and more. This upgrade incorporates a few new features, with the first being an advanced Intent dispatching which lends apps additional control over when and how they are launched as an NFC tag comes into range.

The second is a NFC reader/writer API that allows various apps to read and write to just about any standard NFC tag available today. It also supports limited peer-to-peer connection with other NFC devices. These are minor updates to Android 2.3.3 release which includes an API level 10. Most gizmos running the Android 2.3 platform are anticipated to run Android 2.3.3 or any later version in the future.

The Android 2.3.3 SDK platform for testing and development of apps is out via the Android SDK Manager.
