MTNL brings 3G Mobile TV Service in India

Alcatel-Lucent Logo Carrying the TV around everywhere seems unrealistic? Well, not anymore! Alcatel-Lucent in association with Aksh Optifibre, has announced the launch of India’s first 3G-driven mobile TV service. This service had been launched in March 2010 via MTNL. With such an offer at hand, users will get to experience multimedia and entertainment in a whole new dimension.

Aksh, borrows from Alcatel-Lucent’s cost-effective and flexible mobile streaming server that delivers an enhanced user experience owing to its bandwidth adaptation and video optimization capabilities.

Dr. Kailash Choudhari, Managing Director, Aksh Optifibre remarked that, “At Aksh, our commitment is to deliver ubiquitous technology and path-breaking innovation. We are proud to enable India’s first 3G mobile TV in Delhi and Mumbai. Mobile TV as a value added feature epitomizes convergence in technology realizing the distant dream of live television viewing on the move. Our association with Alcatel-Lucent enables us to materialize that Indian 3G subscriber’s aspiration for a revolutionary product.”

Vivek Mohan, Managing Director, Alcatel-Lucent, India was quoted as saying that, “Streaming video is the fastest growing data service and is a key enabler for mobile operators to justify investment in 3G and LTE technologies. Alcatel-Lucent’s mobile streaming server offers an exceptional viewing experience, high quality video from the very first video frame, and fast and seamless stream switching when zapping between TV channels.”

Alcatel-Lucent will be providing its mobile streaming server as an off-the-shelf solution to launch video-services on the 2.5G and the 3G networks. The server apparently supports all types of standard-based media formats. Moreover, it lowers ownership rates as it shifts from high-bit rate to low-bit rate streaming, depending upon the network coverage and bandwidth availability.

The solution enhances the user’s experience in terms of a fast start-up, bit-rate adaptation, quality video from frame one and flawless stream switching. With this solution even the mobile TV service may benefit as it provides open-interfaces that allow pre-roll, in-stream and post-roll ad insertions.
