Mobile number portability service to be launched in India

According to the reports, the department of telecommunications is planning to introduce mobile number portability in India. This service will eliminate the need for changing phone numbers on switching over to a different carrier.

The introduction of mobile number portability will bring a new change to the mobile phone industry. It is observed many times that users are unhappy with their service provider but still they prefer to carry on with the service as they do not want to change their numbers. Users will not have to take the pain of informing everyone about the change of number in case if they switch to a different service provider.

“The mobile number portability enabling customers to retain their old number while shifting from one operator to another would be launched in major cities by August this year,” says Raja, Union Minister for IT and Communication.

The service will also retain the code number of the mobile phones. The mobile number portability issue is a major one and has been raised many times since the mobile phone industry started growing rapidly.

The mobile number portability service will also provide a freedom of choice for the users and will create competition in the mobile phone industry.

The mobile number portability service is expected to be launched in major cities of India in August and in other cities by end of 2009.
