Mitashi Android KitKat phone for senior citizens outed in India

A new Mitashi Play Senior Friend handset targeting senior citizens, has been launched for a price of Rs 4999 in India. We’re not talking about a basic device here since the product is actually a smartphone running on the Android KitKat OS. It sports the usual features you’d expect in such a phone like large icons and an SOS button.

The oddly-named Play Senior Friend has a big font dialer to ensure people with vision problems need not struggle to use it. It also displays large fonts for storing contact information and going through text messages. On top of these tweaks, Mitashi has added color-coded icons for those who can’t read or write, so that they find it easy to operate the device.

We just don’t understand the inclusion of two SIM card slots since this could actually complicate things for users. Nothing has been said about cameras, but the smartphone appears to embed one each on its front and back panels. The fact that it looks remarkably like the Mitashi AP103 could mean 5MP and 2MP snappers are present, apart from a 1100mAh battery hidden under the hood.

We’ve listed the rest of the specifications of the Mitashi Play Senior Friend below. If you think it’s best to entrust a loved one with a simpler option instead, then we saw Philips launch its Xenium X2566 (second picture) device yesterday. It may not be the cheapest feature phone in the market, but it’s aimed at the elderly population with its large keys and magnifier function.
