Microsoft’s Silverlight Coming on Nokia Smartphones

Microsoft might have been jolted in the recent times by things like problems with Vista or the growing popularity of Linux and Mac OS X. But Windows Mobile, it does have a decent hold thereby giving Microsoft a little respite in a space that is dominated by the likes of Symbian. Microsoft also has a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in that promises to offer next-gen media experiences and let developers weave out interactive applications.

Now Microsoft has sent word that they will be coming up with a version of its Silverlight media player for Nokia’s S60 platform for smartphones. John Case is the product manager for Microsoft’s developer tools. He confirmed that Microsoft will also be making a version of Silverlight for the older S40 platform and the Internet tablets from the Finnish giant. Besides making Silverlight for the Nokia platforms, Microsoft is also working hard to get a version of Silverlight for its Windows Mobile platform. In fact, a CTP will be out soon.

Silverlight will be competing with the Flash player. One interesting fact is that Nokia also has an agreement with Adobe for their Flash Lite player. Analysts are calling it an important win for Microsoft, who is going step by step to gain grip against Flash. Microsoft has also confirmed that the Silverlight media player for Nokia’s S60 platform would be out sometime later in 2008.
