Microsoft Mobile Office app going for free on iOS device owners

Microsoft’s latest free Word application for iOS devices has risen to the top of the charts on the App Store, earning itself the number 2 spot. The app is part of the new Office productivity suite which was released by the Redmond giant just a couple of days back for the iPhone.

Apart from the Microsoft Word for iOS app, the Excel and PowerPoint tools also gained a lot of popularity upon launch. CNET notes that its number 2 position falls in the free application category in the App Store, putting it behind Facebook Messenger and ahead of the main Facebook app.

In the latest Word for iPhone release, users can freely create and edit document and this is made possible by dropping the mandatory subscription to Office 365. However, functionality of the application will be limited to just the basic tools and you’ll need to have a subscription in order to unlock all of the features.

According to Microsoft, the iPhone application offers the same experience you’d get on the iPad version and is optimized for Apple smartphones. There’s Dropbox support as well, which means that you can open, edit and save document directly from the cloud. In other news, the Redmond giant has also updated its Office suite for the iPad and revealed the touch-optimized version for its upcoming Windows 10 OS.

A pre-release of the new tools will be published at a later date for those running the Technical Preview version of the desktop OS. Additionally, Microsoft has also announced the Office for Android tablet Preview and says that general availability is expected in early 2015.

The Word for iOS app can be downloaded from the App Store along with the Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint standalone tools.
