Microsoft directs all Xbox Live Apps for the iPhone must be free

Xbox,MicrosoftA recent announcement by Microsoft will surely leave iPhone users delighted. The software giant has revealed that if programmers do want to make an application for the iPhone, they will have to offer it to users free of charge.

In the mean time, the distributions of all Xbox Live-related iPhone applications via Apple’s App Store have been officially halted by Microsoft.

The 1337pwn Friends List programmers were approached by Microsoft. The application allows users access their Xbox Live Friends List via Apple’s multi-function handheld. Microsoft instructed them that they could keep their app on the App store, but only if they give it away for free. According to a recent conversation, the creators of the application would need to reduce its price to zero.

There are speculations that this is a strategic move by Microsoft before it begins developing its own applications for the iPhone. An official Live Anywhere iPhone app may just be around the corner. Though the quality-versus-branding issue for Microsoft is pretty unimpressive, they are making sure that users are not charged for limited functionality.

The sudden price drop on all Xbox Live-related applications however, should please users.
