Micromax’s Yu issues media invites for September 8 event

Micromax-owned Yu has started sending out cryptic media invites for an event on September 8, hinting at the launch of a new smartphone. It will be the online-only brand’s fourth addition to its handset portfolio.

The invite depicts the side profile of a phone in black with silver buttons and a distinctive camera bump. Its tagline indicates the upcoming phone will integrate the future with the past. Yu has continued the same theme via its social media channels. One Twitter post shows the Mona Lisa with a selfie stick and the other portrays Shakespeare with a Google Glass.

Based on the invite and promotional photos, it’s possible the India-based brand is going to announce a camera-centric handset. It could perhaps be focused on selfies, following the recent rise in good quality front-facing lens in India’s affordable smartphone market. A Twitter exchange between Yu founder Rahul Sharma and Snapdeal CEO Kunal Bahl has further added to the speculation surrounding the device.

The seemingly orchestrated conversation started with Bahl tweeting to Sharma, asking him to collaborate with the e-commerce site. He later confirmed that he had seen the phone. The exchange clearly hints at the new smartphone getting launched exclusively through Snapdeal. The move is a departure from Yu’s previous practice of vending its smartphones only via Amazon India.
