Micromax partners MediaTek to roll out 4G phones, announces Canvas Fire 4G

Micromax and MediaTek have joined forces to collaborate on a variety of affordable 4G-ready smartphones targeting the mid-range and high-end market segments. The India-based company also announced the upcoming launch of the Canvas Fire 4G at the same event.

The new partnership will lead to MediaTek’s Helio X10 chipset being featured in a future Micromax handset, which will make the manufacturer the first Indian brand to do so. Moving forward, the company plans to convert all its Canvas series phones to be LTE ready, beginning with the Canvas Fire 4G.

The device is set to be powered by a 64-bit quad-core MediaTek MT6735M processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. It sports a 4.5-inch screen and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop. The Micromax device houses a 5MP rear camera with flash and a 2MP front-facing lens. It also contains 8GB of ROM, expandable via a microSD card.

According to MediaTek, India is in a prime position to overtake Japan as the world’s 3rd largest 4G market by 2017. In the same year, the country could also surpass the US as the 2nd major smartphone market globally. The company went on to assert that over 65% of the nation is currently accessing the internet through their handsets.

India is the Taiwanese company’s second biggest source of revenue. With this new alliance, it will take advantage of its partner’s presence in Tier 2 and 3 cities to further expand into the country. Micromax in turn plans to release around 15 to 20 devices under $125 (roughly Rs 8500) by the end of 2015.

There’s no specific release date or pricing details for the Micromax Canvas Fire 4G yet. We’ll keep you posted on any future developments regarding it.
