Micromax Canvas 5 octa core smartphone said to be powered by CyanogenMod

The latest story about a Micromax Canvas 5 in the making seems to confirm those rumors about the CyanogenMod OS developers busying themselves with partnering various brands in order to grow the OS until it’s strong enough to take on Android. Oppo and OnePlus are already in love with this OS which happens to be an Android fork.

We don’t know if someone has cleverly made up the news about the Micromax Canvas 5 following the report about Google trying to buy the Android-based OS in question, or whether there’s a grain of truth in it. But a new Canvas phone may join the ranks of the Opp N1 CyanogenMod Edition and OnePlus One soon.

The Droid Goblin quotes a ‘reliable source’ as saying that an octa core smartphone from Micromax is soon to arrive with the CyanogenMod OS inside. Sporting a 5-inch full HD touchscreen, the device may look a lot like the aluminum-bodied Canvas 4 Plus which was revealed not too long ago. It could have 2GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage with microSD card support.

An impressive camera of 18MP resolution is rumored to make its way onto the handset’s rear panel, while a 5MP one is likely to crown the display. The Micromax Canvas 5 handset will apparently get its kicks from a version of CyanogenMod built on the Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS. We don’t know anything about price or availability seeing as the software and hardware combination is still being worked out.

But a Micromax Canvas 5 phone with the CyanogenMod OS will be good news for both parties involved in the matter. There was buzz about the latter having received a $1 billion acquisition offer from Google after all, and the former currently stands second only to Samsung in terms of the biggest mobile vendors in India. There is no word on the Micromax Canvas 5 release date for India as of yet.
