Lenovo says half its phones in 2016 will be Made in India

Lenovo has announced that half the devices it sells in India this year will be Made in India. It plans to produce these handsets at its Sriperumbudur factory located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

To recall, Lenovo had joined hands with Flextronics to manufacture its own and Motorola’s phones in August last year. The facility is currenlty capable of outputting up to 6 million units per year. India is the only country apart from China where the parent company is putting together products from both its divisions.

Sudhin Mathur, Lenovo’s India Director of Smartphones, asserts that the company will continue the Moto and Vibe lineup of handsets. The former will zero-in on flagship offerings, while the latter is set to be positioned as a challenger brand which competes against rival companies.

According to PTI, Lenovo claims that it is the third-biggest smartphone firm in India after Samsung and Micromax. Both its divisions had collectively sold 8 million devices in 2015. This marks a 1.6x growth when compared to its figures for 2014, when it had vended 4.9 million units.

Mathur says Lenovo is going to focus on cementing its rank among the top 3 in 2016. The handset maker had previously announced in November 2015 that it was looking to become the number 2 phone vendor in India. This would go hand-in-hand with its intentions to roughly double its current production capacity of 6 million to 10 million annually.

At the time, Lenovo had said it was planning to set up its Moto Maker customization service in India. This still hasn’t come to fruition in the country. The facility lets buyers alter various aspects of the phone like its color, RAM and material.
