iPhone, iPad and now Apple Watch could be Made in India: Quanta rumor

It has emerged that Quanta Computer Incorporated which assembles Apple Watch units might just set up a manufacturing plant in India, following in the footsteps of its Taiwanese rival Foxconn (also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd). Neither of the two companies have announced any concrete plans for building their production bases though.

In case Quanta and Foxconn do make the move, then some batches of Apple Watch, iPad and iPhone units will be manufactured in India. This could just mean cheaper iOS devices for the Indian market. For the plan to work, both competitors need to know if material supplies can be gathered conveniently, transportation will be smooth and access to ports is not a problem.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Make in India campaign last year in order to build the country into an IT and manufacturing superpower. The aim of the program is to create jobs and skilled personnel in over two dozen sectors including automobiles, IT, electronics, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, aviation and more, to increase GDP and tax revenues.

Industry watchers are pretty optimistic about the likelihood of attracting substantial foreign investment to India’s technological sector. Now it looks like companies abroad are starting to take the bait. Quanta is the number one contract PC manufacturer in the world. Its clients include Apple, HP, Dell, Lenovo, LG, Sony, Fujitsu, Alienwarre, Toshiba and Vizio to name a few.

Quanta’s Vice Chairman claimed that it is still looking into the feasibility of setting up a production plant in India, according to Economic Times (via Reuters). On the other hand, its fierce competitor Foxconn, is already talking to Apple about investing billions of dollars into the nation in order to create at least 10 to 12 manufacturing facilities here by the year 2020.
