iPhone 5 pre-orders soar up to two million within 24 hours

iPhone 5 pre-orders have already hit the two million mark within a span of 24 hours, doubling the record set by the 4S. To top it off, the handset’s demand seems to have surpassed the initial supply, owing to the overwhelming response.

Majority of the pre-orders will ship on September 21, while the rest will be delivered in the forthcoming month, states the company. For those new to smartphone in question, it was announced with the iPod nano 7G and iPod touch 5G and is said to be the thinnest and lightest iPhone till date. A few key highlights include a 4-inch Retina display, the company-designed A6 chip, the iOS 6 platform and an enhanced battery life.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” commented Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

The company has incorporated apps like Maps, Flyover, Facebook and Passbook along with the voice assistant Siri for making recommendations, web searches and much more. There is also the Shared Photo Steams feature that enables users to share content with family and friends via iCloud. The smartphone will hit the market in color combinations of white and silver and black and slate.

As stated earlier, Phone 5 pre-orders have hit a two million mark and those wanting to get a hold of the handset can book it in the US via the company’s online store and retail outlets as well as through other distributors and carriers at a price of $199, $299 and $399 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants, respectively. Orders placed from today are expected to ship within 2 to 3 weeks.
