iPhone 5 to feature removable back cover?

iPhone 5 Patent Image

It seems that the iPhone 5 will arrive packed with improved camera features, at least that’s what reports going round the web suggest. However, there’s no denying that not much can be packed into a form factor as restricted as a smartphone.

In order to expand the handset’s camera function, Apple appears to be contemplating whether or not to keep the back panel removable. This step could probably accommodate bigger lenses with greater zoom attributes, as compared to the earlier versions.

Apparently, all the latest advancements on this front have been detailed in the company’s patent application. Basically, the back cover could feature an IR-cut filter that should help snap up black and white pictures even in dimly lit conditions.

Likewise, the inclusion of a close up lens to facilitate clicking of highly close-shots is also being speculated upon. Besides, the new iPhone may feature a new combination of lens baffle and alternative lens to reduce the field of view for capturing decent pictures.

Considering that all the hardware components encapsulated within the back panel are integrated with the primary iPhone circuit, the device’s usability could be extended. Precisely, the included hardware may bring in features like stroboscopic flash, mechanical zoom and an optical zoom panel with more responses to touch. Besides, the new peripherals may serve as an optical image stabilizer as well.

Though this new technique of introducing a removable part on the handset’s exterior looks promising, it could mean compromising on the design and other technicalities of the device in question. After all there could be a reason why every iPhone released in the market so far is built over a rigid profile.

Whether Apple is indeed going to give the removable covers a thumbs-up for the iPhone 5 is not clear at present. Till then we can assume that it is an R&D project, says Unwired View.
