Indians can’t live without mobile devices while traveling

A new study has found that over 80% of Indians use mobile devices to keep tabs on their work even when they’re on holiday. The country ranks on top among people who do this at least once a day, followed by Thailand at 74% and Mexico at 65%.

The results of the survey were published in the Egencia/Expedia Mobile Behavior Mobile Index report. The global study was conducted online in November 2015 by Northstar and had over 9642 participants over the age of 18. They were sourced from across 19 countries covering North America, South America, Asia Pacific and Europe.

The report claims that nearly 74% of Indians seek out free Wi-Fi in a restaurant when on vacation. 29% of the locals who were surveyed said they had checked their voice mails, texts and mails for 30 minutes on a daily basis. Moreover, 1/5th of them said their partner gets annoyed if they keep up with work while on a trip.

Indians once again rank globally when it comes to using their device for office-related purposes for about an hour every day. According to PTI, 56% of them said they were addicted to their phones while traveling. Furthermore, 36% of residents carry a portable charger, spare battery or rechargeable case to ensure their smartphone doesn’t die while going from one place to another.

Expedia India Marketing Head Manmeet Ahluwalia thinks the reliance on devices has rapidly grown over time and this phenomenon is reflected in the behavior which gets exhibited while traveling. 94% of respondents in China and Taiwan had admitted they placed the highest premium on phones as a travel companion.

84% of travelers worldwide said they want to be able to find information wherever they go. More than half asserted that they would be lost without a mobile device while on holiday, with 35% of them claiming they utilize their handset more frequently on vacation than at home.
