Idea slashes data rates again to fight Airtel

Idea Cellular has officially slashed its mobile data rates again in its attempts to fight against rivals Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. The impending arrival of the third has triggered a massive price war between the first two.

Idea Cellular had reduced the rates of its packs by up to 45% for light internet users who gobbled up less than 1GB of data just last week. Airtel then followed this up with its own plans to cut down costs for prepaid customers by offering up to 67% more data at the same fees.

This seems to have triggered Idea into announcing a further reduction in its packs by a matching 67%. Subscribers of its 4G and 3G BIG Internet packs who consume 2GB to 10GB of data can now take advantage of the lowered cost. In terms of numbers, this means users of its 10GB 4G, 3G data pack just have to pay Rs 990 for it.

Similarly, Idea patrons who utilize its 2GB plan have to shell out Rs 349, Rs 100 lower than the previous Rs 449 tariff. Furthermore, consumers only have to pay Rs 649 for 5GB of 4G, 3G data. This new upheaval in rates has gone live for all its prepaid users. Postpaid patrons will get to reap the benefits of it gradually.

As for less internet-heavy subscribers, Idea has launched new low-cost Freedom Packs which start at Rs 35 and are valid for 4 weeks. If the recent developments are anything to go by, it’ll be interesting to see how Reliance Jio’s official entry into the market changes the landscape of the Indian telecom sector in the long run.
