Idea kickstarts 4G network in South India

Idea has introduced its 4G service in India, launching the high-speed network in 5 states across South India. The rollout comes just a few weeks after Vodafone started providing LTE connectivity to its customers in Kerala and before Reliance Jio’s 4G unveiling.

The Idea 4G network is now available in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The brand plans to spread the service to 75 towns across South India in its first phase. It will expand its coverage to 750 cities over 10 telecom circles including Maharashtra, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Goa by June 2016.

Idea 4G

Idea uses the 1800MHz band to provide its 4G network. It’s offering various introductory deals to entice customers into switching to the faster bandwidth. Firstly, consumers can get a free upgrade to a LTE-ready SIM card. Furthermore, the operator is vending 4G data at 3G rates and has started a Double Data scheme which is applicable when a subscriber opts for a 1GB or above plan.

The initiative is valid for all prepaid and postpaid customers up till March 31 2016. Other early-bird offers include 1GB of 4G data at Rs 150, unlimited music streaming at Rs 29 per month through the Hungama Music app, and an unrestricted movie subscription at Rs 29 per month via Eros Now. Idea has additionally partnered with Snapdeal to provide bundled data offers on LTE-enabled devices.

Idea claims it has gotten nearly 1 million 4G service requests from its existing user base through its pre-book offer. The telecom company further asserts that there are approximately 1.8 million 4G devices registered on its network within the 4 southern circles it’s begun its services in. It has a total of 6 million such users across India.
