Idea Cellular uses 900MHz band to make its 3G debut in Delhi

Idea Cellular has gone ahead and announced the launch of its very own 3G services in Delhi, which it will be providing with the help of the 900MHz band it won during last year’s auction. India’s third largest telecom operator currently boasts of six million subscribers in the country’s capital, with around 30 percent among them being data users.

Like we said, Idea Cellular will offer its 3G services in Delhi on its very own 900MHz band, which means it is the first time that it will be providing this connectivity standard in a metro circle. For those unaware, it has been deploying its 3G web in other areas with the help of rivals like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone.

By stepping into Delhi, Idea Cellular has expanded the reach of its 3G services into a total of 12 markets in the nation. Among all the 3G-supporting bands in India, the 900MHz one is said to be superior in terms of transmission and propagation. What this means is that subscribers of the network operator’s 3G plans in Delhi will be provided with better indoor connectivity for both voice and data.

In December last year, the Aditya Birla Group-owned network operator announced a big tie-up with Microsoft for providing carrier billing in India on Windows Phone handsets. This allows users of these devices to make purchases through the Windows Phone Store and have the amounts deduced through their prepaid balance.

Idea Cellular has been experiencing steady growth in India, and after years of concentrating on rural markets where it still has a huge stronghold, it’s now more open to capturing metro markets as well.
