25 Indian cities can look forward to free public Wi-Fi by June 2015

The government of India is said to be on the lookout for ways to quickly dish out free Wi-Fi access portals at select public places in the top 25 cities of the country by 2015. This roll-out applies to cities with a population of over 10 lakh, and it’s supposed to be completed before June next year.

Part of the much publicized Digital India program of the current administration of India, this initiative is expected to take around three to four Wi-Fi service providers under its umbrella. This is being done in order to gain the flexibility needed to ensure that a speedy roll-out takes place by June 2015.

For those wondering, it’s not the entire cities but select areas from them that will be covered with Wi-Fi access. According to the plans that were envisioned when the Digital India program was first introduced, the aim of the government is to provide Wi-Fi coverage to all Indian cities with a population of over 1 million and to all tourist destinations as well, by December 2015.

While that aim seems quite far-fetched at the moment, it will certainly be a big achievement even if the Indian government at least manages to reach its goal of connecting the top 25 cities with Wi-Fi in the coming year. According to The Economic Times, a PTI report is saying that chosen telecom firms will get around three months to complete the rollout of Wi-Fi services in their allotted areas.

This job will be made easier for them by the government itself, as it will help them in gaining permissions from local authorities for these projects. It has been said that the Indian government has even identified 25 archaeological monuments where it will be bringing Wi-Fi services.

The deadline of June 2015 seems like quite a difficult one to achieve considering the huge nature of this project. It hence remains to be seen if the Indian government is able to actually achieve it or not.
