Google Search offers assistance from 600 percent more locations than a year ago

A study conducted by USC has revealed Google Search has increased the number of locations from where it serves users by 600 percent as compared to about a year ago. Which means that Google has expanded the sites from which it assists people with their queries. And it should be noted that the change has been brought about in close to 10 months itself.

The time period between which these locations have been added lasts from October 2012 to July 2013. At the start of the period, locations serving Google’s search infrastructure stood at something less than 200 and by the end of it, it had crossed the 1400 mark. A steep rise in ISPs was also witnessed and the figure that was close to around 100, shot up to 850.

This expansion has been brought about with a little assistance from client networks such as Time Warner Cable. These are basically used to relay requests, searches as well as ads in order to speed up the process.

Before the company increased the number of locations, a person’s request directly reached the Google Data center. However, now the process has been changed a bit. They now go to the regional network and are in turn directed to the main data center. It may sound like a longer process, but the study says it actually helps reducing the amount of time needed to process the request.

Google seems to be doing its best to ensure faster results and whether this strategy is proving to be effective or not, will be determined by the USC team in the future. They have decided to quantify the gains and detect under-served area as well.
