Google News for mobile now offers ‘News near you’

News Near You

The number of desktop services and apps entering mobile devices has increased by leaps and bounds. Google News which can be accessed to view the latest news even on-the-go now gets a new feature. The US English edition now shows off the ‘News near you’ feature, bringing relevant news related to the user’s city and surrounding areas.

In 2008, location-related news was introduced in Google News and now there is a local section for any city, state or country. The blog states, “We do local news a bit differently, analyzing every word in every story to understand what location the news is about and where the source is located.”

Google now enables users to find their local news on the smartphone. The feature is accessible by typing Google News from the browser of Android smartphone or iPhone. First time users will see a pop up being displayed which will ask to share the location. On responding yes, all relevant news to the location will be displayed in a new section called ‘News near you.’ This section appearing at the bottom of the page can be reorganized. The feature can also be turned off.

To access the latest news, users have to visit news.google.com from their smartphones.
