Google Maps now offers traffic alerts in India

Google Maps has just gotten a major new update in the form of enhanced traffic alerts to warn you away from congested roads. The change will be accessible to both Android and iOS patrons in the country and has begun rolling out now.

The new traffic alerts feature was first unveiled in the US back in May last year. It kicks in the moment you enter Navigation mode in Google Maps after inputting a destination. A spoken voice alert will inform you about the state of the upcoming traffic and help you make out the quickest route to where you want go.

Once this has been worked out, Google Maps is supposed to counsel you when you hit the road. This includes alerting you to any congestion in your chosen path, how long it’ll take to get out of a jam, and offer alternate routes.

Google Maps is also supposed to offer you explanations for the latter. It could be something as simple as the alternate route being the fastest way to a destination or the one with the least amount of vehicles blocking your path. The app had previously launched real-time traffic information for a number of cities in India last year.

Google has been working hard at improving the app for its Indian consumer base. Last month saw an all-new integration with taxi brands like Ola and Uber from right within the application. Prior to that, the tool had introduced offline navigation in the country, an important feature in a nation where internet connections can be spotty and unreliable.

You can download the updated Google Maps app via the Play Store or iTunes.
