Google kickstarts free Wi-Fi zone at Mumbai Central

Google has rolled out its first free public Wi-Fi network in India at Mumbai Central station in partnership with RailTel. It’s planning to install hotspots at Allahabad, Patna, Jaipur and Ranchi next.

The ambitious Google Wi-Fi project aims to cover 100 more locations along the length and breadth of the country by the end of the year. It eventually plans to bring internet connectivity to 300 additional stations. The initiative makes use of RailTel’s fiber-optic cable network which spans nearly 42000RKm of railway tracks.

The enterprise first came to light back in September 2015, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited the Google headquarters in California. The search giant’s CEO Sunder Pichai had previously asserted that the undertaking would bring over 10 million Indians online in its first phase. He claims it’s the biggest Wi-Fi program in the nation and among the largest in the world in terms of subscribers.

While the Wi-Fi hotspots are free for now, Google is looking to make it self-sustainable in the long run in order to expand to more locations in the future. In a blog post, the brand said there will be a drop in speed after the first hour in order to prevent the network from slowing down for everyone.

To access the Wi-Fi service, a person will have to select the RailWire network under their phone’s settings. They’ll then have to open their handset’s browser and input their mobile number into the login screen and choose the Recieve SMS button. The user should get a 4-digit OTP code following this. Once it has been entered and verified, they’ll see a checkmark which indicates that they’re logged in.
