Google celebrates sweet 16 with animated doodle, but is it really 16 years old?

Google celebrated its 16th birthday on September 27 with a simple, but animated doodle marking its special day, something a few of you may have already noticed upon visiting the search engine’s homepage. It shows the G in the company’s logo measuring the heights of one of the Os and the L.

The very first Google Doodle was crafted co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, the year in which the brand was incorporated as a privately held company on September 4. But it all started as a research project in 1996, and the domain name for Google was actually registered in the year 1997.

But even if you insist on the tech giant Google not having been born until it was officially incorporated, it’s still a few days off its sweet sixteen celebration considering that said event happened on September 4. It’s not the first time a Google Doodle has been put out to mark its birthday.

A year ago, the company rolled out an interactive doodle game that celebrated its 15th birthday, in which you could bust a piñata and win virtual candy. We’re seen everything from plain old images to animated GIFs to mini-games on the search engine’s homepage. They’re always creative and fun to simply watch to play around with.

On Valentine’s Day this year, the tech giant released a Google Doodle far more interesting than the one celebrating its 16th birthday. If you remember, the homepage on February 14th allowed you to try your hand at making some virtual chocolates and then sending these across to your loved one via social networks.
