Global smartphone users will reach 1.75 billion in 2014: eMarketer

The population of global smartphone users is predicted to touch 1.75 billion in 2014, according to research firm, eMarketer. If you thought that wasn’t surprising, then get this – mobile adoption actually appears to be slowing down. The estimated increase in the number of users is expected in spite of this reported trend.

The success of home-grown brands like Micromax, Lava and Xolo in India can be traced to the affordability of their devices and the interest in mobile web usage to the data packages being pushed forth by network operators. eMarketer thinks that 48.9% of users will access the web monthly in 2014.

Smartphone Users

Developing regions in Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Middle East will account for a huge percentage of the increase in global smartphone users seeing as many are switching from feature phones to smart handsets. The 2013 to 2017 period is supposed to witness a swell from 61.1% to 69.4% in mobile penetration. The rise to 1.75 billion users may happen this year itself. Towards the end of the forecast time-frame, smartphone penetration among mobile phone users worldwide will be almost 50%.

Almost two-fifths of mobile phone owners, or nearly one-quarter of the world’s population, will use a smartphone at least monthly before we hit 2015. In the 10 out of 22 nations considered in the research, smartphone users held the majority. According to the concerned analysts, the user base for mobile phone internet will mount to 16.5% in 2014 and stick to double-digit growth right through 2016.

The eMarketer report where you will find the nitty-gritty details of the study is titled Worldwide Mobile Phone Users: H1 2014 Forecast and Comparative Estimates.
