Munich-based company, Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has introduced what they claim to be the tiniest SIM card in the world going by the term nano-SIM. This little card is said to be only one-third the size of the micro-SIM cards of today and will apparently pave the way for manufacturers to create devices that are thinner than the current ones in the market.

The company insists that not only will manufacturing companies be able to build slimmer devices, but they will also have a higher rate of performance with this SIM card. With a measurement of approximately 12mm x 9mm, the miniscule new SIM card is almost 30 percent smaller than the micro-SIM. When compared to the standard SIM cards in the market, it is about 60 percent smaller.

“The invention of the SIM card remains a milestone in the history of G&D. With the nano-SIM, we have shown how this development can move closer to perfection,” says Axel Deininger, Head of G&D’s Secure Devices division.

Giesecke & Devrient stated that their research team overtook various technical hurdles in order to minimized the thickness of the SIM card by almost 15 percent. Their slimmed down version of the SIM card will reportedly help in freeing up extra space for other mobile phone components like a larger memory capacity or bigger batteries.

The G&D nano-SIM card is currently being showcased at the Cartes & IDentification 2011 trade show in Paris. It is scheduled to be standardized by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) by the end of this year.
