Android phones running the LTE network could soon boast of clearer call quality, considering that Fraunhofer is bringing Full-HD voice calls to these devices. The software will be demonstrated at the upcoming MWC.

The technology looks forward to making voice calls as clear as that experienced on other A/V gadgets. The Full-HD intelligence is already part of a number of other systems such as video conferencing and telephony as well as VoIP, but has not been introduced for mobile communications as yet.

The codec AAC-ELD utilized in this particular software takes full advantage of the available audio spectrum. It makes for more than four times the bandwidth of most regular phones and about twice the bandwidth of high definition voice services.

“Every day, millions of users already make Full-HD Voice calls over IP connections. With the introduction of LTE, now is the perfect time to introduce Full-HD Voice to mobile communications as well. Our AAC-ELD audio codec is the perfect solution for all upcoming mobile Full-HD Voice services,” stated Harald Popp, head of the department Multimedia Realtime Systems at Fraunhofer IIS.

According to the company, most regular phones are limited to 3.5kHz, while the newer voice services are capable of offering up to 7kHz. And if that’s not enough, the new codec is compatible with music and audio signals too. It makes for quality levels that can match up to those of HDTVs and Blu-ray sans raising the bit-rates.

Fraunhofer has incorporated the Full-HD Voice codec AAC-ELD into some Android phones connected to the LTE network, which will be put up for demonstration at the MWC.
