Foxconn close to inking deal to manufacture iPhones in India

A new report claims that Foxconn is close to signing a deal with the Indian government to produce Apple iPhones in India. If the enterprise is approved, the firm plans to set up a $10-billion factory in Maharashtra.

Foxconn has apparently narrowed in on Talegaon-Chakan and Khalapur as optimal locations for the 1200-acre iPhone facility. The development isn’t entirely unexpected since Maharashtra Industry Minister Subhash Desai had talked about the company setting up shop in the state about a year ago.

Apple iPhone

The news of potential Made In India iPhones comes in the backdrop of Apple’s increased interest in India as a huge growth opportunity. The brand had previously announced its plans to build a development center in Hyderabad which will focus on maps and other research areas.

More recently, the Indian government supposedly rejected Apple’s application to sell refurbished iPhones in the nation. The plan would have allowed the company to market its expensive handsets to more cost-conscious consumers. While the exact reason for the denial is not out in the open yet, it’s likely because of the potential for hazardous electronic waste.

In spite of this setback, Apple is still planning to go ahead with its scheme to set up wholly-owned stores across the land. However, it hasn’t gotten approval for the endeavor from the administration yet. If it does go through, the firm is looking into developing flagship stores in India along the lines of its famous Fifth Avenue outlet in New York.
