Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon India to announce Android One phones tomorrow

Online retailers Flipkart, Amazon India and Snapdeal are all set to unveil the very first Android One phones in the country tomorrow. All three have been putting out teasers for the upcoming unveiling and have asked fans to tune into their official websites at 3.30pm.

We’ve been expecting this seeing as Google had sent out invites for a special event at 12pm on September 15. Before this, there were some murmurs about Micromax slipping the covers off an Android One smartphone last Monday, but we weren’t convinced about it, as we explained in our report.

Going by the teasers, Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon will be offering Android One exclusives from Spice, Karbonn and Micromax, respectively. The Google press event will start at 12pm tomorrow and we’re assuming this is why the aforesaid parties are waiting until 3.30pm; for the tech giant to finish with the introductions first.

There’s not much to be going on with in terms of likely specifications, but the handsets in question may cost Rs 6000 and above. The highlight of Android One is that its a program promoting practically the stock version of Google’s mobile OS and should offer users software updates simultaneously instead of having them wait indefinitely for the manufacturing company to push out upgrades.

The idea was always to let Google have greater control over how its mobile OS is implemented in order to provide a uniform user experience regardless of branding. Giving everyone a chance to update to the latest OS version is the Apple way of doing things and Mountain View really likes it. Also, there will be fewer Android forks to trouble its revenue flow too.

Whatever you may have heard, Android One is not Google’s benevolent move to launch ultra-cheap devices for the masses. As for tomorrow’s surprises, Spice fans must march to Flipkart, Micromax loyalists to Amazon and Karbonn enthusiasts to Snapdeal.
