Mozilla to introduce Firefox OS smartphones for just $25 in India

Firefox OS smartphones backed by Mozilla are all set to try and carve some space for themselves in the Indian market that’s dominated right now by Android products. Mozilla has announced plans to introduce devices costing around $25 in the country, and these will be manufactured and sold by Spice and Intex, two players from the current affordable Android phones movement.

Although neither the names of these handsets nor any detailed specs regarding them have been revealed as of now, it has indeed been mentioned that you can expect them to arrive in the next few months. The manufacturing deals with Intex and Spice have been made with the common goal of making Firefox OS smartphones available at low prices and to more people.

The unnamed handsets from Spice as well as Intex will be powered by Spreadtrum processors, keeping their cost low. At this year’s MWC, Mozilla had announced that it would soon be bringing $25 (approximately Rs 1480) smartphones out into different markets. Powered by the above mentioned chipsets, these devices will offer Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM and a camera as well.

The smartphones are expected to bear 3.5-inch displays on them. So the devices which are planned by Spice and Intex too could match this particular specification. This could very well mean that Firefox OS-equipped handsets will arrive in India priced lower than Rs 2,000.

Commenting that his company has ‘high expectations’ from its partnership with Mozilla, Dilip Modi, CEO and co-founder of Spice, has revealed that the collaboration will result in ‘unique and exciting’ products. As mentioned above, the devices running Firefox OS from Spice and Intex are expected to be launched in the months to come.
