An alpha release of Firefox Mobile has been available since October 2008 but it seems that the browser may arrive as early as next week. Mozilla has chosen Windows Mobile-powered HTC Touch Pro for its release. The Touch Pro features a 480×640 touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard. The news site Unwired has reported that from the Acid 3 test conducted by Mozilla, the preview release of Fennec got an outstanding 88/100 score while running in Windows Mobile.
This seems to be a strong contender and we will wait to see how successful its release is in comparison to other browsers and especially that of the untested Palm Pre browser. Fennec aims to be as simple and efficient as the desktop browser. So far it seems that there are no plans of Mozilla to port the browser either to the iPhone O/S or Google’s Android platform.
As far as availability goes, this milestone release is not meant for the public as of now but will be seeded for developers only. More details to follow soon.
