Facebook will shut down Messenger for Windows desktop and Firefox this March 3

Within two days’ time, that’s on March 3, Facebook Messenger for Windows as well as Firefox will be shut down. We could make a good guess on the reason for the application being pulled, even if the company hasn’t given any explanation for the same. What’s really unusual about the news is the fact that users are being given very short notice about it.

Facebook to concentrate on mobile

Facebook Messenger for Windows Phone was announced at the MWC 2014 which concluded on February 27. We know, it’s really surprising that the app doesn’t exist already. It seems like Microsoft’s announcement about adding hardware partners to the list of OEMs willing to bet on its mobile OS convinced the social network to make such a decision.

Our best guess is that the company is keen to concentrate on mobile platforms and not devote much time to desktop applications. Why else would it be pulling the plug on its Windows and Firefox apps? The Next Web feels that the dying buzz around a Facebook Messenger for Apple’s Mac OS X further supports the theory about the social network’s lack of interest in desktop tools.
