Ello ad-free social network goes public and gets an iOS app

Ello is the idealistic, ad-free social networking site you may not remember because it wasn’t available on mobile as an Android or iOS app, or open to the general public. Well, the developers behind the website have made the necessary changes and now offer the Ello iOS application in the Apple iTunes Store and may also do the same for Android. Additionally, the invites system has been ditched and anyone interested in checking out the service can sign up for it.

Facebook and Twitter users may complain frequently about the advertisements and paid content that keep appearing in their timeline. But we don’t think they’d be willing to switch to a social network very few of their friends (if any at all) are part of. Ello which was launched in March 2014 is basically facing the kind of problem every awkward new transfer student in a typical Hollywood movie has to deal with – how to win friends and be popular when there are others already hogging the limelight.

Ello is based on the unproven idea that people care a lot about their privacy. But we do detest being bombarded with advertisements. Companies like Google and Facebook sell user data to advertisers and marketers, enabling them to serve better targeted campaigns. So they are invested in collecting accurate information and enforce real-name policies. Ello lets folks aboard without asking for their real identity and even pinky swears not to turn over user details to advertisement firms or third parties.

This obviously means no one will want to run a campaign on Ello since being able to estimate the target audience of an ad is of utmost importance. The social networking service can probably hope to earn revenue in the future from business or vendor pages. The number of people using the Internet on their mobile devices is shooting up so fast, the company’s most recent launch of its iOS app seems unduly delayed. And there’s no concrete word on when Android and other platforms will get the application.

The possibility of the Ello iOS app being able to give the network a fighting chance against biggies like Twitter or Facebook are extremely low. Even Google Plus could not dethrone the latter though it tried very hard.
