Dolby Digital Plus for mobile phones unraveled in India

 Dolby Event 01

Sound is only half the picture! We’ve often heard George Lucas’ (of the Star Wars fame) words being used in various contexts. Well, the last we comprehend it popping up was yesterday at a stunning event laid out in Mumbai by Dolby. The company doffed the red silk off its Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Mobile software. Until the day before, we’ve seen Dolby foray the domains of PCs and Laptops. However, it has now decided to go mobile with these two software.

The event witnessed personalities such as Sean Durkin, Public Relations Manager Dolby along with Melanie Holst, Global Partner Marketing Manager, Mobile and Pankaj Kedia, Head, sales and Business Development India. The N8 was the chosen smartphone to display the Dolby Digital Plus capabilities. The audio brilliance that most of us have come to expect from Dolby was exhibited by connecting the N8 to the TV coupled with surround sound speakers using its HDMI connectivity abilities.

On attaching the smartphone to the TV, the audience witnessed the same magic of Dolby acquired through a small portable device. Our audio indulgence was further augmented with a trio of extracts that displayed how the sound encircled the entire room. The very first video excerpt showed us the kind of sound being emitted by each one of the five speakers present and connected to the television. Subsequently, a clipping of an Ace Norton piece. The delights that followed subsumed Kung Fu Panda and Tron Legacy excerpts.

The sound was positively commendable as we continued to indulge in no-compromise multichannel audio. We were later treated to a hands-on experience of the N8, as we were eager to see how Dolby Digital Plus continued its audio brilliance even when not connected to the television and speakers. Leaving the external peripherals aside, it was an enticing experience on a one-on-one basis. As we moved on from movies to music, somewhere in the middle the entire Dolby feel was left behind. On hearing songs aloud or with earphones plugged in to the N8 the Dolby experience was lost. The Dolby Digital Plus has until now only graced the N8.

The event then moved onto to showcase the Dolby Mobile on a prototype Android-based device, branded with the words Google on its rear. With a touch of the Dolby audio, we enjoyed the audio using the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones from Monsters. Interestingly, the Dolby Mobile logo opened up to let us customize the software for the kind of headphones we were using, offering options such as Sennheiser and Galaxy S headphones, among others. Although it currently offers very few alternatives, additional options will soon be added. The software embedded within the handset endowed music lovers like us with rich audio inclusive of the ambiance and sonic depth of the multichannel surround sound.

Other than handsets, the Dolby’s presence encompassed the Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder and is said to be ported to other media players. The folks at the event concluded by stating that they looked forward to working in conjunction with several other companies.
