Digital India Week: C-DOT to showcase solar powered Wi-Fi, 100Gbps OFC projects on July 6

C-DOT (Center for Development of Telematics) will announce plans to launch various broadband products during Digital India Week that’s scheduled for July 1 to 7. Minister for Communications and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad, will reveal four offerings on July 6 covering a solar powered Wi-Fi setup, a long distance Wi-Fi system, C-DOT Next Generation Network (NGN) in MTNL Network and 100Gbps OFC Link.

C-DOT appears to have successfully trialed its NGN solution via 1000 landline connections. The system is meant to help telecom companies progress from legacy PSTN (public switched telephone network) methods to the age of modern Internet telephony. The governmental body has announced that MTNL will be able to transition its 3.5 million fixed line users to an IP-based network and thus be able to provide subscribers various services covering voice as well as voice and data.

With an aim to take Wi-Fi connectivity even to remote areas in India, C-DOT has developed a long distance Wi-Fi system. It’s a wireless platform which is supposedly capable of delivering up to 100Mbps broadband Internet speeds. Consistent bandwidth along with high speed is possible because of the Direct Optical Fiber at WAN interface feature. The challenge of implementing it in hilly areas where direct Line of Sight (LoS) is absent, is solved by the integrated mesh technology.

Link redundancy will take of failures of one radio/link and the project will be backed by solar power. Speaking of green sources of energy, C-DOT’s ‘Solar Wi-Fi’ will operate in 5.8GHz and 2.8GHz bands. It is designed to survive variable input voltages and harsh environmental conditions. The system will come in handy for ATMs, database servers, cellular base stations, backhaul link for Wi-Fi hotspots and more. It could also serve as the backbone for the National Optical Fiber Network (NOFN) or Bharatnet.

Lastly, C-DOT’s mini 100G OTN (Optical Transport Network) platform called Suteevra can support the infrastructure necessary for providing high-speed Internet anywhere and at all times. It can handle a large number of applications and protocols. The 100Gbps Optical Fiber Cable link is capable of dealing with a distance of up to 50 kilometers without an amplifier.
