CERT-In says over 62000 cyber attacks took place till May 2014 alone: IT Minister

CERT-In (Computer Emergency Response Team – India) claims that 62189 cyber attacks were reported until May 2014, a worryingly high number if you consider that this relates only to the initial 5 months of the year. These figures indicate that the situation will only get worse and continue to spike just like it has over the past few years.

2011, 2012, 2013 and the first 5 months of 2014 played witness to 13301, 22060, 71780 and 62189 security incidents, in that order. Similarly, the number of Indian websites which were hacked into is calculated at 21699, 27605, 28481 and 9174, respectively. There’s no speck of hope the last mentioned figure can deliver since it accounts for the January to May, 2014 period only.

We’re talking issues covering scanning, spam, phishing, malicious code and more, said Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, in answer to a question posed in the Lok Sabha. CERT-In reveals cyber attacks to be originating from various countries around the world such as the US, Pakistan, Brazil, Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Europe and China amongst others.

Hackers generally use special masquerading techniques and hidden servers to stay out of trouble. The increase in cyber attacks has a lot to do with the ever deepening penetration of IT and its related services. The years 2011, 2012 and 2013 saw 422, 601 and 1337 cases being registered under the Indian Penal Code dealing with cyber crime.

One can always hope for better security applications to help curb the rising number of cyber attacks. The thought that mischief makers will surely not lie idling around and will find new hacks to beat the system shouldn’t discourage individuals and entities from trying to fight online crime.
