BSNL rolls out Rs 118 prepaid plan to take on Jio

BSNL has unveiled a bunch of prepaid packs and a revamped postpaid plan for various circles across India in the hopes of competing against Reliance Jio’s onslaught. They vary from low to high, appealing to a wide range of consumers.

Starting off with the lowest plan, Rs 118 will fetch you 1GB of 3G/4G data and unlimited voice calls which includes roaming except for Mumbai and Delhi. The pack lasts for 28 days and additionally offers free access to a Personalized Ring Back Tone. It’s currently only available in Tamil Nadu.

BSNL’s Rs 118 plan directly contrasts with Reliance Jio’s Rs 98 scheme. The rival telecom operator gives away 2GB of 4G data, unlimited voice calls, free subscription to Jio apps, and 300 SMSes. It sticks around for the same 28-day period. The latter is clearly the superior option as it provides 1GB of additional data.

BSNL Broadband

BSNL has also announced a new pack in Kerala which is priced at Rs 379 and serves up 4GB of 3G/4G data per day and unlimited BSNL-to-BSNL voice calls for 30 days. However, it’s not actually unlimited since the calling is restricted to 30 minutes per day.

Anyone on the lookout for something more data-intensive can look to BSNL’s Rs 551 prepaid plan. It dishes out 1.5GB of 4G data on a daily basis and the same free Personalized Ring Back Tone for 90 days. There’s a catch here as well, as the data speed drops down to 80Kbps after the FUP gets exhausted. The company’s not giving away any calling benefits here, a major drawback.

On the postpaid side of things is a Rs 399 scheme which now offers outgoing roaming calls. The pack got launched recently without this benefit, but it looks like BSNL has course-corrected itself. A Rs 799 plan is also available, offering 30GB of data and unlimited calls.
