BSNL rolls out new unlimited packs starting at Rs 99

BSNL has announced a couple of unlimited prepaid plans in Calcutta to take on rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio head on. The packs start at Rs 99 and go up to Rs 999.

The Rs 99 plan goes on for a period of 26 days and offers unlimited voice calling during that time. There’s also a Rs 319 deal which offers unlimited calls with roaming. However, the roaming offer excludes Delhi and Mumbai. Finally, paying Rs 999 will grant subscribers 1GB of data everyday and unlimited calling for 181 days.

That totals up to 181GB of data. One thing to keep in mind is that BSNL only offers 3G data speeds in most parts of the country at the moment. Kerala is the only exception right now, but other states should get upgraded soon.

In fact, Calcutta Telephones CGM SP Tripathi told PTI that BSNL expects spectrum in the 2100MHz band to become active within a few days. The equipment for this is also ready to go. He’s optimistic about the company’s 4G rollout happening in phases in the city across 650 towers.

Tripathi claims BSNL’s Calcutta 4G push could happen as soon as March. He thinks the next fiscal year will be a much better one for the telecom operator as the price war raging in India ever since Reliance Jio arrived on the scene settles down. This is a touch wishful, since the battle doesn’t look like it’s ending anytime soon.

Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea have all been actively rolling out packs to undermine each other. BSNL has been considerably slower to catch up.
