BlackBerry Passport or that ‘weird squarish phone’ lands in India at Rs 49990

Let’s admit it already, we’ve all been waiting eagerly for the squarish BlackBerry Passport to enter India and it has done so at a price of Rs 49990, the sort of rate reserved only for flagships. The BlackBerry Passport smartphone will be sold online exclusively through Amazon India and start shipping out to customers next month, from October 10 onwards.

The BlackBerry Passport is one of the most strangely shaped smartphones we’ve come across in recent times. Staying true to its name, its form factor is inspired from what the company calls a universal symbol of mobility – a traveler’s passport. Its 4.5-inch 1440 x 1440p screen has a 1:1 aspect ratio, meaning it’s a square.

Do you remember that silly phase BlackBerry went through when it decided to make customers out of everyone (last video)? Well, it’s sticking to productivity-driven business professionals this time in the hope that serving a niche market with the Passport will help it revive its brand value to a certain extent.

But it’s not as if the Canadian company has nothing more mainstream to offer India in which it still has a big fan base. As we reported earlier, the BlackBerry Classic with its 3.2-inch 1440 x 1440p capacitive display, 2GB RAM, 64GB expandability and 1.5GHz dual core Qualcomm SoC is due to launch here too.

Getting back to the Passport, it’s BlackBerry’s flagship smartphone and lands with a quad core processor from Qualcomm as well as 3GB of RAM. Since 32GB of internal memory may fall short of all your ‘business’ needs, a microSD card for expanding the storage by another 64GB, can be found under the hood.
