BitTorrent Surf web client announced in beta version

After launching an alpha mode in January, BitTorrent has revealed the beta version of its web client known as Surf. The company states that this began as a Chrome experiment, with its major objective being simplifying the protocol and improving the search process.

One of the most significant features of this introduction is that the service permits monitoring users’ downloads from within a browser itself. The utility’s icon finds itself seated on the top right corner of the portal and aims at rendering faster access to torrents across various search sites. It touts a recommendation engine which gives precedence to featured files from the company itself and its partners.

Also, granting the ability to quickly glance at the progress of downloads is the status window feature. Having being termed as the next generation of content discovery, the beta version has been tuned to instantly detect search sites. To make browsing through portals convenient, this edition allows users to customize the search engine by adding their most preferred sites.

Since the service also calculates and displays the health of every torrent, people have been presented with the privilege of choosing the most high-quality media available. Other highlights of this edition happen to be the push to play attribute and the web client’s ability to render content from Internet Archive-like portals from within the search results in just one click.

Recommendation Engine

The beta version of BitTorrent Surf, which started out as a Chrome experiment has now been extended to Firefox as well. All in all, the extension rescues users from the process of hopping between their browsers and the protocol so as to see the progress of the current downloading files. While this seems like a fairly good attempt by the company, the web client is still said to be in its early stages.
