Bandwidth hunger makes users and carriers take to Wi-Fi Phones

Wi-Fi Logo Wi-Fi and hi-end mobile phones go hand-in-hand. Now-a-days phones are increasingly being used to surf the Internet. Moreover, the demand for greater bandwidth is also increasing day by day. For this reason it seems that users, carriers and handset manufacturers are looking up to Wi-Fi for benefits like better coverage, enhanced bandwidth and wider availability.

According to a research conducted by ABI, nearly 141 million Wi-Fi handsets were manufactured in 2009. The large number of Wi-Fi enabled-mobile devices being shipped asserts that the hardcore Wi-Fi Certified testing program from Wi-Fi Alliance has been well accepted. The research indicates that the volume of certified Wi-Fi devices grew by 142% in 2009 from 2008 levels. As of now, a total of approximately 500 mobile phones have been Wi-Fi Certified.

“The phenomenal growth of handsets offering Wi-Fi is no surprise. Carriers and manufacturers have come to know Wi-Fi as a reliable, high-performance technology that’s been independently validated in our renowned certification program. The Wi-Fi CERTIFIED program helps ensure a seamless user experience when using Wi-Fi enabled mobile phones,” exclaimed Edgar Figueroa, chief executive officer of the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Michael Morgan, industry analyst ABI Research, explains that the reason carriers have befriended Wi-Fi technology is to navigate traffic away from licensed spectrum and elevate consumer experience, whereas handset users are demanding for Wi-Fi enabled phones is due to a superior data rate and indoor reception benefits.
The near future will be seeing a rise in demand for handsets with better technology. In fact mobile handset makers have already started integrating advanced Wi-Fi Certified n technology in hi-end mobile phones, thus giving them enhanced coverage area. The Certified n system includes a variety of performance-driven features to accomplish market needs within a large number of applications.

The devices with the Wi-Fi Certified n technology are aimed at providing users with improvised coverage and range. Also data transmission with the Certified n version lowers battery consumption in comparison with the older version. Also Enterprise IT managers will be enthralled to receive such technology as it allows greater capacity and several users can be connected through a single network node.

Wi-Fi Certified n devices are inclusive of the Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) quality of Service. WMM gives network resources gives precedence to network resources for voice and video applications to enhance the performance of real-time applications. Moreover the Wi-Fi certified devices are scrutinized to make sure that they are in accordance with advanced WPA2 security capabilities.
