Asus and Lenovo have $149 Chromebooks in the pipeline

Asus and Lenovo are said to be busy creating Chromebook laptops that are set to offer incredible value for money thanks to their ultra-impressive price tag of $149, which translates into roughly around Rs 9000. These products will grab 11.6-inch displays and come fueled by Rockchip processors that help in keeping their cost down by such a large margin. They will be out early next year, according to the report.

To give you a little perspective on the matter, the cheapest Chromebook that can be bought at the moment is the Acer C7 which asks for $199 of your hard-earned cash. This makes the new Lenovo and Asus offerings a good 25 percent more affordable than the current crop of notebooks running Google’s desktop OS.

Like we said, cheap processors made by Rockchip will be the main factors responsible for these products grabbing such a low price tag. Lenovo is already using the company’s RK3188 chip on its 10.1-inch Android notebook named A10 which was introduced in October this year. Moreover, last year’s Asus MeMo Pad 8 contained a Rockchip processor at its heart as well.

This information about the two companies gearing up to build $149 Chromebooks comes from Digitimes which claims to have received the details through the Greater China supply chain. The publication hasn’t revealed what the other specifications of these laptops will be, but judging by that price tag, they are not expected to be high-end in any way.

Of course, since these Lenovo and Asus laptops will be Chromebooks, they will come equipped with Google Chrome OS which has been built to facilitate quick Internet access. We’ll keep digging for more information on these offerings, so stay tuned.
