Asus confirms Android 6.0 Marshmallow rollout for its smartphones

Asus has joined the list of smartphone vendors detailing their Android 6.0 Marshmallow rollout plans, officially confirming which of its devices will be getting a taste of the new OS in the future. Unfortunately, the Taiwan-base brand has chosen not to reveal when exactly the selected handsets will receive the update.

The list of Android 6.0 Marshmallow eligible smartphones was announced through a post on the company’s official forum. The phones getting the upgrade to the new build include the Asus ZenFone 2 (ZE550ML/ZE551ML), ZenFone 2 Deluxe/Special Edition (ZE551ML), ZenFone 2 Laser (ZE500KG/ZE500KL/ZE550KL/ZE600KL/ZE601KL), ZenFone Selfie (ZD551KL), and PadFone S (PF500KL).

Android Marshmallow

Notably, older first generation Asus offerings like the ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5, and ZenFone 6 are not present in the list. A leak back in October suggested these handsets would begin receiving Android Marshmallow during the brand’s second phase of rollouts, but this has not been officially confirmed. The forum post additionally did not disclose what kind of features the brand would be including in the update.

Android Marshmallow comes with a number of significant improvements over its Lollipop predecessor. Some of the tools which could be included in the Asus upgrade include enhanced privacy controls and better insight into app permissions. Google’s new Now on Tap feature allows users to quickly search for relevant information without leaving an app, making it easier to book tickets or set a reminder.

There’s also an Android Pay payment system, native support for fingerprint scanners, a Do Not Disturb mode to block pestering sounds and notifications, and a battery saving tool dubbed Doze to handle power consumption. Other features which may find their way into Asus handsets are a RAM manager, a brand-new app drawer, support for USB Type-C ports, and auto backup.
