Apple iPhone gets point and translate AR Word Lens app

This next app is something that seems to take a leaf from Google’s Goggles. The all new Word Lens app for iPhone leans on augmented reality to translate printed words from one language to another in real-time.

The app uses the iPhone’s built-in camera to execute the task of capturing and translating text that the user points and shoots at like menus or road signs. Translations may also be looked up by hitting them out on the virtual keyboard.

Text needs to be kept in focus by holding the phone at least a hand-length away from it. A point to be noted is the fact that the app does not identify stylized fonts or handwriting and accommodates only English and Spanish for now. This creation is being offered up by Quest Visual and works in Reverse Words and Erase Words modes too.

Word Lens is available for iPhone through iTunes, while the Spanish to English and English to Spanish language packs cost $4.99, apiece. It works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch running iOS 4.0 or higher versions.
