Amazon has declared 2011 to be the best holiday with regard to its Kindle slate sales. The company states that the entrants in its Kindle family of tablets has been flying off the shelves at a faster rate than expected, all over the world.

Millions of Kindle eReaders have sold till now and the most number of eBook downloads this year was recorded on Christmas day. The members of the Kindle family which debuted a few months back include the new generation Kindle, Kindle Touch Touch 3G and Kindle Fire. As per Amazon, the month of December was the best among all since customers apparently bought more than 1 million Kindle devices per week, which gave a huge boost to the company’s sales.

“We are grateful to our customers worldwide for making this the best holiday ever for Kindle. And in a huge milestone for independent publishing, we’d also like to congratulate Darcie Chan, the author of ‘The Mill River Recluse,’ and Chris Culver, the author of ‘The Abbey,’ for writing two of the best-selling Kindle books of the year,” commented, Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com founder and CEO.

According to the online retailer, the Kindle Fire, Kindle Touch and the new generation Kindle held the top three positions on the Amazon.com bestseller charts. Not only customers, but also authors seem to have benefited with these new Kindle mobile devices as the number one and four best-selling Kindle books released in 2011 were published independently by authors through Kindle Direct Publishing.

Another success nugget that Amazon revealed was that the gifting of Kindle books between Black Friday and Christmas Day was up by 175 percent this year as compared to the same period of time in 2010.
