Airtel’s offering 5GB of data with its new Rs 98 plan

Airtel has once again brought the fight to Reliance Jio, rolling out a new pack which offers 5GB of 3G/4G data to its customers for Rs 98. The offer lasts for 28 days, but doesn’t include any unlimited calling or SMS benefits.

This is pretty strange considering most of its new packs include both calling and SMS perks. Perhaps Airtel wants to focus its attention on data-heavy subscribers who don’t have much need for either calling or SMSes. The pack is currently only available in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana circles, but could travel to other parts of the country soon.

Crunching some numbers, Airtel will be asking for approximately Rs 20 per GB of data. This is a lot more than its other Rs 149 plan which gives away 28GB of data. This comes to around Rs 5 per GB of data, which is a lot better value for money.

On the other side of the coin is a new Rs 93 scheme by Airtel which promises unlimited calls and 1GB of data for a period of 28 days. Here, the focus is clearly on voice calling rather than data. However, this deal sticks around for 28 days only in a couple of circles. For instance, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana residents can avail this offer only for 10 days.

Reliance Jio has its own Rs 98 plan which gives away 2GB of data, 100 SMSes, unlimited calls, and free access to Jio apps. This lasts for a total of 28 days, offering more bang for your buck than Airtel in terms of non-data benefits.
