Bharti Airtel has started offering V-Fiber internet broadband which delivers up to 100Mbps speeds in Chennai, and will soon be extending the same to other cities across India. There are a few things that make this launch very exciting apart from the obvious advantage to the end user in the form of blazing fast download speeds, stronger Wi-Fi signals and zero buffering while watching online content.
Airtel is the first telco in India to employ vectorization – the most popular fixed broadband tech in Europe – in order to provide customers with 100Mbps connections. Existing subscribers who want to try it out will simply need to apply for another modem, while new users will have to tolerate the drilling and wiring required to fix them up with a line.
Instead of digging up roads to add wires, the company can leverage its existing DSL infrastructure, or copper cabling, fortified with vectorization (interference elimination technology) to deliver its new broadband service. With the goal of reducing attenuation to the broadband signal, Airtel has also equipped its local exchanges to handle the much higher fiber speeds.
So somewhere in its press statement, Airtel has explained that V-Fiber will reduce its carbon footprint while extending a quick, free upgrade to consumers. There won’t be any increase in monthly rentals, though users will have to pay the price of the modem. On a side note that has nothing to do with V-Fiber, Airtel’s current broadband subscribers are now welcome to unlimited free voice calling regardless of the service plan to which they’re attached.
Although Airtel V-Fiber is only available in Chennai right now, there are plans to take it to 87 other metros across India that the company is already serving.
