Airtel brings free calling, cloud storage through app update

In spite of being one of the most popular telcos in India, Airtel has been feeling the heat of Reliace Jio’s bid to take over the industry in a big way. The former is now offering free voice calling through its My Airtel app that’s available for both Android and iPhone.

However, unlike Reliance Jio which is currently embroiled in issues over dropped calls due to lack of points of interconnection, the company is giving away complimentary voice calls only within its own circles from Airtel Dialer (accessible through the app interface). Under this deal, users can avail of 50 free Airtel-to-Airtel minutes. But there’s more.

Those who find themselves frequently running out of local memory on their smartphones can also take advantage of 2GB cloud storage and scheduled nightly data backups at no charge at all. At the time of writing this post, only prepaid customers were eligible for this service though there are plans of extending it to postpaid numbers soon. Another extra is the Airtel Jackpot feature which awards 5GB free night data to prepaid users.

A much-requested addition that enables postpaid subscribers to keep tabs on their voice, SMS and data consumption in one tidy view, has also been launched within the application. Lastly, there’s a new section in My Airtel with curated apps like Ditto Live TV, Wynk (Games, Music and Movies), Hike Messenger, Juggernaut and Airtel Money under its umbrella.
