Airtel to begin offering free Wi-Fi in Gurgaon

India’s biggest mobile operator Bharti Airtel, has revealed that it has won a contract to launch its Wi-Fi services in Gurgaon, in the Delhi NCR area. The company has inked a deal with the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon to deliver limited but free access to the Internet. The general public will be able to sign into the Wi-Fi hotspots offered by Airtel and surf the web at no charge for the first half an hour.

After accessing the Internet for 30 minutes through a Wi-Fi zone set up by Airtel, users will be prompted to continue doing by paying for the service thereon. They will be able to buy recharges of mobile data conveniently. It has been announced that the network operator has committed to providing Gurgaon residents with wireless Internet at a speed of 2Mbps, according to The Economic Times (via PTI).

The Wi-Fi hotspots will be dotted across various areas in Gurgaon including Leisure Valley Park, MG Road, Sadar Bazaar, Sector 29 and Sirhaul Village. Apart from Airtel, other service providers like the state-run BSNL, Vodafone India, Tata Docomo and Reliance Jio are also in on the game. Once a non-Internet user is hooked onto the magic of the web, it’s easier to convert them to customers.

This is why operators are willing to undertake the task of rolling out Wi-Fi that is free to a certain extent. In Gurgaon, Airtel will make available 30 minutes of data per device per day. All users need on their person is a Wi-Fi enabled mobile phone or tablet. The company will keep mum on the exact price plans for the rechargeable mobile data packs until it sets up its hotspots.
